It's the most significant advancement in radiobroadcasting since the introduction of FM stereo more than 50 years ago. HD Radio technology enables AM and FM radio stations to broadcast programs digitally - a tremendous technological leap from the analog broadcasts of the past. It delivers FM stations, now with CD-quality sound; AM stations, now with FM-quality sound; Crystal-clear reception with no audio distortion; new channels to play more of what you like to hear. There's no subscription fee! Reception is free if you have an HD Radio. ILUV I166 is an excellent clock radio that receives high-definition AM/FM radio. With HD-Radio, broadcasters can use the current radio spectrum to transmit free analog simultaneously with new higher quality digital signals. This eliminates the static, hiss, pops and fades associated with today's radio caused by conditions known as multipath, noise and interference. HD Digital Radio supports CD-quality sound as well as song titles and artist names. And because the digital signal piggybacks onto a conventional broadcast signal, it is free to the listener. We think you'll simply love this unique clock radio from iLuv. Programmable presets for 30 radio stations (10 for AM / 20 for FM) Digital dock and date display with dual alarm function Auxiliary line input for any audio devices with 3.5mm jack (i.e. your MP3 player) for play through radio Audio output - 3-Watt RMS x 2, 6-Watt RMS / 12-Watt Peak at 1% THD

The product is described as a alarm clock HD radio. First, even though there are many HD broadcasts in my area, the radio only seemed to pick up a few. Second, an alarm clock radio should never use an Liquid crystal display since it needs to be viewed directly on. With the face tilted so that in the standing position, the display is clear, when laying in bed, the display cannot be read at all. It should be an LED display. Third, the alarm setting offer only radio as an option, not a buzzer. The sound is pretty good and shows the company's expertise is sound reproduction. Unfortunately, this product does not function well as an alarm clock radio.

"All told, a pretty good HD radio" 2009-11-28

This radio is pretty awesome actually. From some of the other reviews I had been expecting a 'four star' radio, but this is a solid, excellent HD radio. I'll start with the cons, because they're very short:

- No user-replaceable battery backup. But it will maintain the time for a short power outage (no more than 5 minutes) and it 'saves' the time the power went out. So if the power was out 30 minutes then the time and so the alarms will be 30 minutes late. This isn't too bad since most outages should be short.

- No time display when on, it always shows the station info. However, if you tap the time-set button it displays the time for 10 seconds without actually entering the time set mode. You can put a $1 clock from the dollar store next to it... but you shouldn't have to.

Now the many pros:

- No fan. It's convection cooled.

- Built-in speakers are sound pretty good. They're as good as you'd expect in something like this.

- Input jack to use it's speakers for your ipod or computer. There's no dock, but you can use it as basic speakers for any audio.

- Output jack so you can play HD radio on headphones or through a receiver with real speakers.

- Excellent reception. It needs the antenna connected, but even with the FM antenna still bundled up from packaging it was able to tune in stations perfectly. If you are close to the station you can just tape it to the back so it's out of the way.

- Internal power adapter, so no 'brick' like some others

- Low(ish) power use, ~8 watts when on and playing radio, ~3 watts playing AUX, ~1.5 watts when 'off'. This seems to be really good for HD radios.

- Looks nice, easy to use. Physically, everything about this says 'quality'.

Edit: I had to move this radio and could not get any HD reception at all. Apparently where I had it was just a really good spot. I since bought a Terk Technology FM+ Indoor FM Antenna and it fixed all the reception problems and I once again get HD radio. I'm using it for computer speakers and as a tabletop radio, and I still really like this product.

 "Found the right radio!" 2009-11-06

I love KNCT-FM radio station, SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL out of Killeen/Waco, Texas. However, I was able to listen to it only in my car, not anywhere in my home nor at the office. Now that I bought this iLUV HD radio, I can listen to KNCT-FM right in my bedroom!!! I am tickled to death about this because I just simply love the oldie music this station is known for. Also, the Sunday afternoons Old Memory Maker's program of the Big Band era by Charlie St. George, I could not enjoy unless I was in my car. ! Now I have it al home and crystal clear. The radio is worth to me every penny I spent on it.
