"Yet another disappointing internet radio" 2010-04-13
By CMB (Salem, Oregon)
This is the third internet radio I have returned (I also posted reviews of the Aluratek and the Grace Allegro). I am forced to conclude that this is an entire product category that is just not ready. As for the Ccrane: like the Grace, some of the stations which I supposedly could get via reciva did not come in; but it does get stations that stream in Real unlike the Aluratek. The sleep timer is tedious to operate, requiring several menu steps. The remote didn't work most of the time -- I literally aggravated my repetitive stress tendinitis repeatedly pressing the button in the hopes of turning the unit on or off or getting through a menu. But ...after 2 days it simply would not connect, first to my network and then when it connected to my network it couldn't connect to the reciva server. I tried everything including resetting to factory defaults and reconfiguring. My network was working fine and I could not see any indication that the reciva site was down. Back it goes

** UPDATE**

see my review of the refurbished Asus EEE PC 900A -- a netbook that will do the job (except maybe alarm clock...)

"I had no local radio option" 2010-04-01
By Berk (Kamiah, Id)
I was excited when I found this little radio! My only choice for any station in this remote area of Idaho was a local "country" station...no news...etc...

Finding this wifi radio on the Internet provided through CCrane was as exciting as my first date. Shaking, unsure and afraid I'd make a mistake, I called them....they held my hand as I stepped into the age of wifi radio. I would have paid double or more to have access to all my stations available in another state I had moved from.

It is trouble free and easy to program. I suppose I could have waited for a competitor to manufacture a cheaper version, I'm sure, but who cares at this point of total isolation without news, I could not wait for them....

The sound and volume control is great....I only wish I had more control of the back light....

"Second C Crane WiFi to die on us..." 2010-03-31
By P.M. Reynold (NJ, USA)
Our first one lasted less than a year before the LCD display died. C Crane finally agreed to replace it. The replacement unit just died. It will only turn on about half the time, and it will not respond to the remote when it is on. Yes, the remote battery is okay...

"Great radio, and don't use it with Airport Extreme" 2010-02-27
By AudioEngineer (San Jose, CA, USA)
APPLE AIRPORT EXTREME users: If you use an Airport Extreme, do not expect any brand/model wifi radio to work with it in wireless mode. This issue has been documented by others in these Amazon reviews, and was confirmed by a C Crane technician. The radio may fail to connect to the router, even when my MacBook Pro running iTunes placed next to the radio joins and runs just fine. (Though I've known for months now that iTunes running on a Mac doesn't stay connected reliably for an 8 hour stint.)

Now about the C Crane radio: I like the design of this Wifi radio better than any other I've handled so far. Easy to set up and use, room-filling sound (for voice), line out AND headset out jacks, great for music when connected to stereo or iPod speaker set, perfect size, great controls, Receiva and Pandora support.

The C Crane staff are really picky about audio quality. The audio on the line out and headset jacks is clean and solid, CD quiet when no audio signal is present. This is important since we use it connected to our component stereo system most of the time. The speaker seems optimized for voice, and though the radio's case is small the speaker can easily fill a 200 square foot master suite with your favorite morning talk show.

I had a heck of a time trying to keep the radio joined to a wireless network on my Airport Extreme, and thought it was a defect in the radio. Turned out to be the Apple router, there is nothing wrong with my radio. I connected the radio to our Linksys WRT54GX router and have been running the radio now for three days and giving it a real workout with no problems whatsoever. No way it could perform that well joined to the Airport network.

What could be improved on this radio? The display format - I don't need a continuous display of "128 kbps WMA". I'd like to see track data in the second line so I can use it to purchase music, without a wild dash for the computer to see what is currently playing. Also, if the first tier customer support staff were better clued in on router issues the reviews here would have a lot more stars.

We have several component stereo systems in the house, and I look forward to equipping each of them with this C Crane radio.

"BIG flaw in the CCrane Wi-Fi Radio" 2010-01-29
By James Bynum (Fall River, MA, US)
I just purchased a CCrane Wi-Fi radio. It's a neat little product for the money. However, it has a BIG problem - the radio turns itself on spontaneously. When I called CCrane this afternoon, I was told that it was a router problem. I disagree. Like millions of others, I have a very common Linksys 802.11g router. If the radio can't work with it, the problem lies with the radio, not the router.

C Crane could not tell me which routers their radio will work with, nor do they have plans for a firmware update to correct the problem, according to the representative I spoke with.

If I had it to do over, I'd buy a radio from a different maker.

"Poorly thought out, just like all the other Internet clock radios" 2009-10-10
By William R. Koplin (Boston)
First let me say that it is a joy to get my morning AM news station CLEAR without all the buzz from living in the shadow of the Bourne Bridge (Cape Cod) and the crackle-pops when bad weather is moving in. It's also fun to Dx through the 2200 or so internet stations.

That said, there are more cons than pluses here. The radio's controls are as poorly thought out as all the other internet radios. Instead of trying to reinvent the wheel, why can't a single one of these "engineers" take one of the easiest to use standard clock radios as a template (Magnavox CD-stereo clock radio or Proton--hell even Sony!) and build the controls around that control layout?

The manual for this product stinks, so don't go there for help. Customer support is non-existent--I e-mailed them asking how to keep the panel light on permanently during the night(if the radio isn't running,I can only find out the time by fumbling in the dark and pushing the left top button to briefly light the display)--I NEVER got an answer, and that was 6 weeks ago!

Also, I stated the sound is ClEAR, I didn't say anything about fidelity-- for $150 I would expect it to sound better than a $17 Sony clock radio, but it doesn't.

So, bottom line, I tried all the HD radios, and several of the $100-200 internet radios and this one was the best I could find, but the only reason I am keeping it is that it gave me a clear signal, most of the stuff on it works, and my wife got sick of my testing and returning radios! It fits nicely on the nightstand, looks "normal" unlike some of the monsters available, and does the job we wanted, oh, and I got it on sale for $50 off.

"The Best Clock Radio I haver ever purchased or seen!!!" 2009-09-12
By MGB (San Diego, CA)
This review is for the Sangean RCR-8WF Internet Clock Radio.

[...]

A little about me/my history to qualify my statements:

OK, for the last few years I have bought at least 5, probably more, clock radio alarm clocks. I have spent anywhere from from [...] on each of them. I have bought RCA, Timex, Sony, Emerson, and another that escapes me at the moment. The features I focused on were, dual alarms, easy/auto time setup, battery backup for time and settings during power failure, FM radio, nap timer, sleep timer, some other audio(CD, MP3, HD, Internet, Weather). It didn't have to have all those audio formats, just one that worked. Most of the alarm clocks worked ok for the alarm settings, but all of them failed in FM radio reception. I had tried both internal and external antenna models. I had 2 different CD models, both of which failed before 1 year usage. Other features are different on every model. If you have looked, then you know what I mean. I never got an HD radio model, this internet radio just seemed more flexible. So I broke the bank when I bought this alarm clock radio. I thought, maybe my expectations were just too high for less than [...], so I splurged. WOW am I surprised, in a very positive way!

The Review:

I don't know if you can find an alarm clock radio that works this well, for less, but I can tell you this alarm clock radio works very well. This alarm clock radio is doing everything it says it will. The FM reception is excellent. The wireless(wifi/802.11) internet radio reception is excellent. (I have a good, but run of the mill, wifi network in my home connected to a cable mid tier broadband service). I was able to connect to internet radio, knowing a local radio stations call letters, without ever using my PC or using the free Reciva service. I also tried the free Reciva service and it worked fine also, and provide an easier method to search and try out all kinds of internet radio. I can also play my MP3 audio collection stored on my computer, with excellent reception. The time automatically sets to internet time and has setting for any time zone. It has 2 alarms that can each be set individually for FM/Internet/buzzer for weekends/weekdays/specific days of the week. I mean, it is so flexible and works so well, I am just totally amazed. Yes, it is a little geeky and the menu's are not as intuitive as they could be, but going through the included manual, I was able to figure everything out without major issues. The LCD is kind bright, but it is adjustable. Problem I had is adjusting it so its not bright at night, makes it too dim for viewing in day and visa versa. I don't know if there is a light sensor that I can turn off/on to help, its not that big a deal for me. This probably won't work well for audiophiles as I think there is only one speaker. But it has good sound and is loud enough to fill a large bedroom with good quality sound. The only big problem with this radio is the price. To have to spend [...] to get an alarm clock radio that works well, is kind of ridicules, but I will recommend to buy this one to anyone who asks. Again, its the best alarm clock radio I have ever played with in a store/seen at friends/or bought myself, and I recommend it, even at the high price.

"Great potential, but needs a firmware update" 2009-08-24
By K. Witek (New York, NY)
I have had this radio for about 3 weeks now, have used it extensively, and it has some great potential, but unfortunately it is let down by its still immature software. There are freezes and restarts and there are some usability features where things should be better thought out (eg: the Sleep function that the other review points out).

I believe that you should consider the following:

- if your priority is to be woken to Internet radio: hold off a little until new firmware is available and fixes some of the issues

- if your priority is an alarm clock with the HWS system (Humane Waking System): you should purchase another one of Sangean's alarm clocks - eg: the higher rated RCR-3

The other advanced alarm clock to consider is the American Innovative Neverlate alarm clocks which are even more customizable.

 "Frustrated" 2009-07-06
By Stug (Westport CT)
re Sangean RCR-8WF. I get a strong signal from my Linksys WIFI at a distance of 50 feet. The Sangean radio couldn't connect and function till it was within 2 feet of the router, and still indicated a weak signal. I tried to use the radio's FM mode, but the radio insisted on searching for a network connection, and wouldn't let me do a band shift to FM. It was loaded with their latest software update.

Sangean's website and manual provide no help.

I wasted several hours trying workarounds, including another network.

 "Sangean RCR-8WF" 2009-06-25
By Mark E. Patton (Denver, CO)
I purchased the RCR-8WF as a replacement for an old Panasonic clock radio mainly for the Internet radio capability and for use at night. It is not a bad radio but seems more like a work-in-progress than a well thought out product.

My issues with it are:

1) The sleep timer takes three button presses to work. Turn the radio on, press the sleep timer button, then press select. Try doing this in the dark when you are half asleep! It should take one - press the sleep button. This is the way their other radios work.

2) The display brightens to full when any button is pressed. The manual says that you can dim it in this mode but is does not keep the setting. You can dim it but then comes back full brightness the next time you hit a button.

3) The internet radio takes about 15-30 seconds to change stations or to come on the first time. I understand the technology involved, and could deal with this if it were not for the other issues.

I contacted Sangean a week go about these issues and still have not heard back. I will be returning it and waiting for a more mature product.

"Excellent product for its price range - terrific sound!" 2010-02-06
By Dianna Young (Rapid City, SD)
I searched for a long time before selecting this item. It has excellent sound. It looks nice. The only issues I have with this product are that it isn't a "quick and easy" set up. Not challenging, just more effort than one might think. - The clock display becomes miniscule while in radio mode. And the input jack is on the front instead of the back. - I had considered hooking this up to some exterior speakers, but with the input jack in view, this would have looked 'junky'. That being said, I was so impressed with the sound, that I did not feel the need to use speakers after all. I love being able to listen to stations all around the world. This really is a terrific product. Having researched many other similar products, I'd have to say this is one of the best out there.

In this age of microwave speed and advanced technology I suppose there is the danger that some people will never be satisfied. I love my I Luv! If you want to listen to local radio stations then buy an average common radio. If you are buying this as I did, to listen to music from around the world, to improve your foreign language skills, etc. you can't go wrong. My language skills have improved immensely since buying this radio. It sounds great, way better than shortwave. I have it on all the time and am quite pleased with the access I have to other cultures. Sure, when my internet goes down so does it. That's a given and is the fault of my internet provider, not the radio. I'm not very technologically inclined and I managed to program my 20 favorite stations without too much trouble, and didn't mind one bit that I had to do it with the radio, not the PC. If I wanted to have to use my PC I would just use my PC for listening to interent radio. I bought this so I wouldn't have to be tied to my PC! I can take it upstairs with me when I am doing the dishes or my homework etc. then take it back downstairs to listen to it in my bedroom. It isn't huge, but I can honestly say that I gladly give it prominence on my bedside stand. I LUV it!

 "Bad Radio" 2009-12-22
By C. Pastor (Saint Pete, Fl)
This iluv radio stops and starts as it plays. It is most annoying, especially when listening to the news. It looses the internet connection for no apparent reason, then reconnects in 30 seconds or 3 minutes. This problem occurs in wifi mode or with a LAN line connected. "Customer service" is an oxymoron at iluv. There seems to be no viable way to communicate with tech support, as they don't answer the phone, don't respond to voice mail, and they have yet to respond to an email set to them a week ago. With so many other internet radios to choose from don't waste your time and money by buying an iluv product.

"Great unit, intuitive and very quick set up" 2009-11-12
By F. Higgins
I have to say I am mostly disappointed with stuff in general but not with this. Out of the box I was listening to internet radio in less than 4 minutes. (I have a wireless router of course which we use to feed 2 laptops and a wii and now the iLuv int170.) The sound IS a little bass-y at low volume and yes even with the dimmer the blue output is a little strong even when dimmed.

But overall it is a cinch to use. Searching staions is very easy and again it is a cinch to preset up to 20 internet staions. If that is not enough, it also keeps track of your recently listened to stations in another screen. The headphone and auxiliary jacks are in front, where they belong.

I have not been to the website yet to register and utilize the update service online but so far, out of the box and for the price it is a winner.

"Great internet radio, display could be bigger" 2010-02-01
By M. Liebschner (Houston, TX USA)
This is a great internet radio, although it allows you to listen to a lot more than these preprogrammed internet radio stations. Overall, the setup is not too difficult, finding the stations is OK once you know what you are looking for. You will have to figure out where best to store the stations you want to listen to so you can easier find them; for example if you want to listen to FM radio and internet radio, you can store both in the favorite folder.

The sound quality is good at low sound levels. It would use a little more power if you wan to use this to entertain. The display could be a bit bigger. If you have to go through several menus to find what you are looking for, a bigger display could help. However, that's generally not a problem once you know where your favorite stations are and how to get there.

At startup, it always takes a bit of time till the internet radio starts up. Of course, the radio has to talk to the router back and forth but for some reason, my laptop is 10 times faster in doing that. Once connected, it works great, we never had any buffer problems or sound distortions, it works like a charm.

In summary, it's a great product, I am glad I bought it and would do so again.

This thing is cool. Pretty easy to use. I couln't ever get it to connect to a secure network, but unsecure was pretty easy. I was hoping th iPod dock would work for a normal MP3 player which it will not. No big deal though. It comes with free 90 membership to Rhapsody, which for some reason keeps disconnecting from the server, so no subscriptin to Rhapasody for me. Other than the above listed minor issues I love it. Sounds great, and has tons of features. I would wait for a special though, don't know if I would pay $500 for it.

"Very poorly designed interface and sound quality is laughable." 2009-12-26
By Mattski (Seattle WA, USA)
This item sucked up hours of time in frustration before I returned it. The instructions are printed on vast white pages at a microscopic size, they don't answer any questions - they just make it look easy. Until you try and follow them that is. The interface for inputting an encryption Key is difficult to use and takes a very careful procedure not to make a mistake. There is not way to double check your input string. My encryption key is long (generated by my router) and the Denon interface could not display all the characters. I never got it to connect to the wireless even though I have successfully and easily connected two other computers, an Xbox, a Wii, and two phones.

It docks an iPod just fine but the sound quality was far below what was advertised. My default car stereo sounds much better, and it didn't work with the iPhone. It also doesn't charge your iPod when on the dock from what I understand.

Very poor user design and a sad musical experience.

 "Poor service policy" 2010-01-27

This radio is a great idea, but it is not easy to set up and somewhat difficult to use for someone without any technical skills. But the main problem is their service policy. The remote did not work, so I called the company and was told they would replace it and/or the radio - but that their rule was that I had to pay to ship the entire unit it back to them.

 "Not bad!" 2010-01-25
By Doug Adams (Newton, MA United States)
I bought this, my first wireless internet radio, for use by my bed. I have never used the alarm function. I like to leave the radio on all night tuned to BBC World Service of local news overnight, have a pillow speaker, yadda yadda. ANYway, this isn't a bad little unit and at a good price. I dislike the menu navigation, but I have managed to make it easier to use by setting a bunch of Favorites. When it loses the connection to my network--whenever I reset the router or change its settings, or whatever--reconnecting requires entering text the old-fashioned "abcABC" way. I really hate that. BUT, once everything is set it runs like a champ. Sound is good via headphone, pillow speaker, or regular speaker. FM analog reception is adequate. I tried using a thumb drive with music files on it, and it worked, but I don't use it for that. Make sure you don't lose the remote! (I also have a couple of Squeezeboxes around the house, and, of course, this is not as good as those--but almost!) I highly recommend this if you want to save $$$.

"Would've been great if it worked..." 2010-01-20
By Alex Woods (Indianapolis, IN)
I bought this for my wife for Christmas to replace another alarm clock radio that died. The features and sound quality would have made this a great product - nice music options of internet radio, FM radio, MP3s from USB device, or streaming music from your computer. I liked having a remote to be able to adjust the volume while we're getting ready for work in the morning. You could set the alarm by choosing any combination of days of the week which was neat (early 7AM Wed meetings...)

We used it with FM radio first and it sounded so much better than any other alarm clock radios we've had. But, I had to return this for three main reasons:

1. Would not keep time. It would change time, date, and year randomly, even when set manually and told not to sync with the internet. Can't use it as an alarm clock.

2. Would not connect to the internet. We bought a new wireless router, set the security key correctly, and it pulled an IP address but always had a connect error when trying to find any internet station. We tried a help ticket with Aluratek, and they were very responsive, but we were unsuccessful.

3. The back light started cutting in and out after about 2 weeks. There is a button to turn it on/off which is nice, but it wouldn't stay on or would flicker and go back out. Can't read the screen at night anymore.

Hopefully we had a lemon, but we're not giving it a second chance. Problem now is to find another similar product...
