 "good product" 2010-02-08
By Jennifer F (Twin Cities, MN)
I really like my Sunrise SAD Therapy Light Box w/ Dawn Simulator. It has been EXTREMELY helpful this winter. I think that the pros outweigh the cons.

Pros:

Bright LED energy efficient

Works as SAD light and alarm clock

Quiet, no clicking noises

Bright enough to read by

Different alarm times can be set for each day

Cons:

Price

Cannot aim light

Runs fast (about 1+ minute a month)

Complicated menu

Limited backlight levels for digital clock

I bought this box a year ago and (after reading my way

through that horrible interface) was thrilled to find that it does

cure inability to wake up in the winter. However 2 of LEDs started

flickering about 2 months after I bought it and now it's like waking up

to a strobe light. No gradual dawn anymore, more like a way to wake up

with seizures.

Sunrise SAD Therapy Light Box w/ Dawn Simulator

I have asked, twice, for information on this product's UV research safety which documentation any light therapy box company will readily provide to those that request it. Without UV filter these lights may cause damage to some with macular degeneration and other eye problems. This company has not been responsive to my request in providing that research info to me. I like the idea of the dawn simulator on the product but beware if company doesn't provide that info.

"I love my light boxes, but not this one" 2009-01-18
By king_tinac (Reston, VA United States)
This is my third light box, and the main reason I ordered it was because I wanted to try a dawn simulator. The dawn simulator really hasn't helped me to get up, but that could just be me. I do like the fact that this light box is small and puts off a white light (I have a blue light, which I hate), but overall, I cannot recommend it.

The only reason I do not like this light is because the interface on the box is horrendously bad. There aren't a lot of options, and yet, I have to keep the manual closeby so I can lookup how to use it every time I want to do something. I couldn't even figure out how to turn the light off in the morning. I now only use it as a regular light box, but even that is a problem because I have to click, click, click through all the options to set the timer even though I set it to the same time every time I use it. Finally, to change one menu option, I have to go through every single option every time (i.e. it won't let you exit the menu early).

Just FYI, I am an engineer, so it's not that I am illogical or can't figure things out. This interface is just so horrible that it is frustrating and makes me wants to throw the thing out the window. The only reason I don't is because of how much money I spent on it.

Pass this one by... I think there are probably better light boxes on the market (my favorite is no longer produced or I would recommend it). I also would not recommend this as a dawn simulator - try one of the others on the market.

 "sunrise simulator alarm clock" 2010-03-18

"Way too much $ for what it is" 2009-11-04
By Carol Lee (Ohio)
I wish I could have shopped for this kind of item in person so you could see how big, how bright, generally how it works.

The light itself doesn't wake you. The beeping alarm (or radio) wakes you. In no way should this product be advertised as "an exciting new way to start the day." The total effect of this item is when you wake up to your alarm, there's a low watt bedside light on in your dark room. That's it. Ok, so you didn't sense the light come on because it was gradual... but the end result is not impressive. Even at the peak of the "sunrise," it doesn't light up the room or make you believe you're waking up to light.

Doesn't seem like the technology in this product is complex enough to warrant the price. I bought a timer for my bedside lamp for $5.99 at my local hardware and will see how it compares.

On the plus side, shipping was speedy and it arrived ahead of schedule. I bought it through amazon.com so I could possibly read reviews and have some confidence about ease of return. Amazon's list price, new, was $77 compared to the Soleil website's listing of $165, which is a laughable price point for what this is.

 "Wonderful product!" 2009-09-03
By Landenberg Lady (Southeastern PA)
I love this product!

I have had two sunrise lamps; both have died when their plastic buttons gave out after 4-5 years of use. I decided to replace that bulky lamp with this product, which uses a regular lamp (I can determine the wattage and have a prettier lamp!), takes up very little bedside table space and costs about 20% less.

This is a far better product than the all-in-one sunrise lamp. I appreciate that the backlight can be turned off completely on this unit. The clock has all the features I loved in the bulky lamps: I can vary the time for sunrise and sunset and it includes a security setting for when I am away. Turning on and off the lamp also is far easier with this unit than with the all-in-ones.

The only flaw in this clock is in the design of its cords/plugs. The clock was designed in the UK, where large cords are the norm and every plug is grounded. The wires on this are way too big, the plug is three-prong and the weight of the wire and can make the unit somewhat unsteady on a table top. I have mine on the edge of the bedside table, which is perfect for me, allows the wires to hang over and keeps the unit very stable. I am happy to live with this minor drawback -- this is a wonderful product and I am delighted to have found it!

"Wish I bought it sooner" 2008-12-05
By AK (Seattle, WA USA)
Fantastic product - the description doesn't really do it justice. In addition to sunrise simulation, it also simulates sunsets, has a nightlight and reading light mode (fully adjustable dim level), security mode (random light on/off), backup alarm sound, a snooze function, and ability to set different alarm times for each day of the week. Once you get everything plugged in, you can use the snooze button to turn your lamp on/off for normal function. The only drawback, as noted by other reviewers, is that the power cord is a little short. Still works for how my table and lamp are setup but could also remedy with a small extension cord.

 "Sunrise Lamp" 2009-11-22

 "Poor value" 2009-07-16
By Truffles (CT)
Attractive, good concept, makes it much easier to wake up on cold winter mornings. However, after a few months the plastic buttons began to break in pieces. I was still able to use the clock, but had to use the eraser end of a pencil to push the buttons. Eventually the clock began emitting a constant, extremely loud, high pitched sound. It was out of warranty, and I threw it away. This clock was extremely overpriced, considering its poor quality and short life span.

By M. Dean (columbus ohio)
If you have trouble getting out of bed as the days get shorter and shorter, this alarm clock will help. It will also help you fall into a really sound sleep at night as well.

The set-up isn't exactly intuitive and it isn't exactly cheap - but I would definitely buy it again.

I especially like the ability to set the length of time it takes to turn the light up/down based on individual preference.

I've had mine two months and I recommend it.

By namita singh (oakland, ca)
I've been using this clock for about a month, and, though I was a bit skeptical, I've found it consistently wakes me up before the audible alarm goes off. I don't usually feel like jumping out of bed, but waking up quietly is a world better than waking up to the usual loud, sudden alarm. I would certainly recommend it.

 "Great sunrise alarm clock" 2008-01-18
By Kathryn K. Simon (Stroudsburg, PA)
This is a great sunrise alarm clock. We have had a sunrise alarm (different brand/style) for the past 6 years and the buttons were difficult to use and it did not seem to be of good quality - always on the edge of breaking. We recently purchased this clock and really like how it is set up and the quality of the product in general. The buttons are easy to use to set the alarm time, the feature of having a 15 or 30 minute sunrise is great (we like to use the 15 minute cycle and other models did not have the option to select a faster sunrise time), it is attractive enough - looks somewhat small on the website but it is pretty good sized, provides good light - enough to read by at night as well as ample light for waking up, and has a nice loud alarm to accompany the sunrise should you sleep through it. Overall we are very satisfied - the only slight con is that when the alarm is not turned on the digital numbers on the clock are illuminated quite a bit more than when the alarm function is on, which is annoying as we like the numbers to be softly illuminated. This is a good buy for the money.

"A Quick Very Little Clock" 2009-08-08
By S. Evans (Tejas)
It would be one thing if the buttons were big enough for even petite finger or if the light was really very bright to notice or even if the clock kept proper time- but it does not! I received this item as a gift and was shocked the sticker price. I've had the clock a few years now and have been itching to get rid of it. I have to continually reset the time- every 6 weeks I find it's gotten ten minutes faster so I either set my alarm ahead or range back through the numbers to set the time correctly or to correct it the next month again. The radio is cheap and difficult to tune. I need a sunrise clock but at this point I'm thinking of getting a "Vacation" Timer for my bedside lamp and just set that instead. What a bother.

 "worked... for a while" 2008-10-06
By Dirk Hunt (okc)
Don't expect this to last more than 1 year.

The digital display was so bright that it hurt to look at it if you woke up and wanted to see the time.

But the bottom line, it didn't work after about 9 months.

I only give it 1 star because I had to.

 "A Complete Waste" 2008-02-08
By Denis Keith (Maine)
This tiny (I mean teeny-weeny) all plastic clock is nearly impossible to read, harder to set and operate, and is less bright then those plastic "seen on tv" touch lights. The dawn effect does not wake me (I'm a light sleeper) and it is not natural full spectrum light. I bought the adapter (Ka-ching$) and it doesn't work with my natural light lamp. A real rip-off. And it gains time, @5 min/week.

Customer Buzz
 "Not worth it!" 2007-11-21
By Colleen White (Cleveland, OH USA)
This product sounds good, but doesn't live up to its description. The clock ran fast, and the radio is cheap. The built-in light is very small and dim. I got the converter to be able to use my own lamp in addition, and this provided enough light, but I still had 2 problems with it. First, the light increase is step-wise in seven levels, not smooth. With my brighter light, the increases were noticeable and jolted me awake too fast. Second, the alarm-light function on this clock did not work properly. For example, I set it to reach full light at 6:30 am on a 30 minute cycle. It started the cycle early, shut off the light completely at 6:15, and turned it back on at full brightness again at 6:30. Not exactly a gradual waking process. I would not recommend this product at all. There are other much better products that don't cost that much more than this. Go with one of them, you'll be happier.
