this is my first review on amazon, although i have been a customer for years.
i thought i would put my two cents since the reviews seem to be all over the place.
i am a life long musician and very critical about sound systems.
and i have to say this is a great little piece of equipment. it's best selling point is of course the amount of features they have managed to put in such a small device. trumps even high end full size stereo systems.
i have seen a lot of criticism on the sound quality. and this is fair to an extent. but depends what you are looking to use this for.
this is an all in one device. and most of what it does it does great.
but remember most of the functions for the device are for playing compressed files. be it MP3, AAC, WMA, etc. compressed files are just that, the amplitude of the sound wave is compressed to optimize file size. this really sacrifices both highs and lows.
internet radio stations, ipods, and broadcast radio use compressed files. these files often lack bass and brilliance.
Denon s-52's built in eq does a fantastic job of bringing these files closer to their original unadulterated sound. to me, this is a great thing. specially for an all in one device designed to play mostly compressed files.
the cd player while still acceptable, is equalized the same way, and thus, gives you an overdone bass boost and high boost.
the only feature missing would be a simple EQ to overcome this problem.
but if your collection is mostly mp3 files and you are planning to listen to use most of the features like internet radio, this product cannot be beat even at the original price.

I have purchased and subsequently returned two S-52's. It is hard to believe the manufacturer has not pulled these off the market. It is the same type of disregard that Klipsch showed when they knowingly flooded the market several years ago with defective 4.2 THX computer speaker systems.
Defects: unit would shut off, start buzzing and then freeze up completely approximately every hour (requiring unplugging and plugging back in), one unit would not play any size USB flash drive (2GB-32GB new and formatted), HD radio would not capture HD-2 or HD-3 stations in the memory and much more... These are what I consider basic functions that were inoperable.
Denon's tech support was worthless and unresponsive. They did not even know the difference between NTFS and FAT32 file systems. They wanted me to ship, at my expense, my brand new unit back to Denon for repair - No Way Jose.
Just like Klipsch (see above) and Onkyo (overheating 939) before, I simply do not trust Denon anymore (once burned)!

I opened it and set it up in about 15 mintues, including the WiFi internet radio. Very Simple. It looks nice, great for a contemporary setting. The sound is great for such a small piece of equipment loaded with almost every feature you can imagine for an all in one. The only thing missing is a DVD playing capability. Everything worked great. Then, after about 5 minutes of play on the "internet" radio (very cool and easy to use feature) the sounds stops and is replaced by a high pitched humming noise that will not stop. In addtion to that, when this happens all the control buttons on the remote and on the unit lock up and you can't do anything. The only thing you can do is to power it down. When you re-power the unit on, it works fine in all modes, until you fire up the internet radio again. Which again works for about 5 minutes and the same thing happens again. I've tried other stations, re-setting the unit which was "customer services" only suggestion. They said if it continued after resetting the unit to return it, which I am promptly doing. I'm glad the problem exposed itself within the 30 day return period. I liked the unit so much I was considering buying another one, banking on this is a one-off problem. Only issue now is the new ones are $150 more than I paid for this one new just 2 weeks ago. Seems the white colored one, which I bought, is no longer available. And it is now only available in black which must be $150 more popular than the white! So back to the drawing board looking for and under $400 unit with internet radio, CD playing capability, clock etc.

So after a phone call with Denon to clarify the iPod Compatibility Chart located here:

It turns out that the devices in RED are NOT AT ALL SUPPORTED.
Which is a real bummer, because anything new you get will basically not work, specifically any iPod Touch (2nd gen) or iPhone 3G/3GS with OS 3.0 or higher.
Do note that the "regular" iPods, like the Classic and Nano, in addition to the original iPhone and iPod Touch work fine.
With newer Classic and Nanos though, device charging is also disabled.
They had no comment on the availability of a similar device in the future.
If you have an older device that is fully supported, then you might be able to take this item for a great price, but I urge you to think about the day when your iPod dies or you get something newer, because at that point it will likely not work.

Wonderful nsound. Once I updated the radio's software it was easy to set up favorites from FM, AM, XM, and Internet radio. Enjoying the two alarms feature also. Only issue is sometimes internet stations lose signal due to servers being down.
