This clock radio is perfect for me. I don't understand why you'd want to get the one with a CD player. You have an iPod for crying out loud. Who needs to play music from a CD? Anyway, off subject. The controls are clearly marked, and easy to use when you follow the directions in the manual. I got it set up in 5 minutes. The sound is good for an alarm clock, better than my old one. I don't think you need Bose speakers with an alarm clock.
My ONLY negative is that the volume control for the alarms is REALLY low. I don't like loud music when I wake up. I just don't like to be jolted awake so I end up being scraped off the ceiling. It's a bad start to the day. So I tested the alarm with the setting at 3. I couldn't even hear the sound. I boosted it all the way to 7, and could hardly hear it. I settled at 8, which is perfect for me. Now, if you're hard to wake up in the morning, and need a loud alarm, this may not work. I didn't actually see how loud you can go with the Sony. If it's no higher than 10, you dead people may be hard to wake up!
I suppose I thought it was a bit expensive, but I think all the iPod clocks are overpriced, so considering it's a Sony product, it's right on par. That's another reason it got only 4 stars, price.
The base for the iPod is kind of flimsy, if you plan on closing it every morning. I don't, so it's not an issue. BTW, the manual didn't' say you could use it with a generation 5 NANO, just a generation 5 iPod. But I have a gen. 5 NANO, and it works just fine. TIP: The adapter doesn't work with the gen 5, so I just plug it in w/out it. Works just fine.
All in all, a great little clock. I'd recommend it to a friend.

I recieved this item as a gift, and it is exactly what I was looking for. Our basement activity room had no clock and I didn't want to take up wall space with a clock that would be hard to read, as it is quite dark most of the day. The light up feature is great and it's nice to be able to dim it down, since it's above the TV and could be distracting otherwise. I use the radio/iPod function a lot when I'm playing video games and don't need the sound. It's great to have a remote that operates ALL the functions, so you don't have to get up to change between radio and the iPod or advance to the next song on the iPod. The tray is sturdy and it's nice that it pushes in, so the clock could travel quite easy. Also, the sound is quite good for such a small speaker; there isn't any crackling or uneven sound.

I like the clock for several reasons.
First, the alarm can be programmed to only sound during the week and not on the weekends. Therefore, I can leave the alarm on over the weekend and not have to remind myself to turn it on Sunday night. It has good sound and good tuning. Both of the alarms can be set and to different stations, at different times, and at different volumes. Handy.
There are several problems. First, and worst, is that it is too bright, even on the lowest setting. I have no idea who has the lights at their highest: corpses? Second, pretty much every time I touch the clock, I accidentally push a button, either turning on the radio, turning off the alarm, or something. Finally, when I put my iPhone in the dock, the radio emits a low hum. So, I don't do that anymore! But I'd like to...

For the most part all the other detailed 5 star reviews are correct in outlining it's features. The best one is that it is relatively small with a concealable charger (probably why you are looking at this in the 1st place). The sound is great, the time automatically syncs with your cell phone (no setting required), and the charger accommodates iPhone cases (spouse has an Agent18 black plastic case). I really wanted to give this item a 5 star review; however, I believe it has 2 major drawbacks...
One, it is very bright! During the day the three brightness settings seem fine. However, even the lowest setting is very bright at night after your eyes adjust to the dark. I can get up in the middle of the night and navigate the room and find things with out a problem. Not an issue if it was a night light. The problem occurs because most people have their night stand right next to their bed and the clock usually faces them. Well, even on the lowest setting my spouse has to turn it away from them to keep it from beaming into their face. This defeats half the purpose of the clock.
Two, the price. This item is not worth shelling out 60-70 bucks (I did because it was Christmas and my spouse really wanted one, at the time). It's an alarm clock for Pete's sake! Ok, it's an alarm clock with an iPod charger...30 bucks would seem more fair.

The website states that this works with the IPhone. In fact when the IPhone is plugged into the dock it gives a message that it is not compatible with IPhone, and the ONLY function that works through the Sony is IPOD tunes. NO OTHER audio apps on IPhone will play, such as Pandora, Sirius, Podcasts, etc. Too bad, because the unit is nice in every other way, but this was a dealbreaker for me. Still have not found a compact dock with a clock that does what I need.
