"Ok but not as advertised" 2010-04-07
By R. Ishima (chicago)
First, this is not an atomic clock. Equity did a clever trick. They preset the time and date at the factory. They then put in a lithium button battery to keep the clock ticking. The button battery lasts around 3 yrs. So when you plug the clock in, naturally the time would pop up automatically and the ac current would take over the clock chores. Unplug the clock and the button battery takes over keeping time; but no display since that would drain the battery quckly. When the button battery goes, so will the instant start feature, until you replace the button battery and manually reset the time.

The clock does have an auto dim features that work fine. The blue display is dim for normally lit rooms, but ok for bedrooms. Blue should not be the color of choice since blue is the worse color for human perception of sharpness.

Generous 2 year warranty. Bottom of clock has a build date sticker that is a guage on how much life is left on the battery.

Manually setting the time is straight forward. Instructions are adequate. One of the clocks I purchased would not light up at all. The instructions does detail the reset procedure and boom the clock lit up, but you have to manually input the correct time.

Got it at close out so price was great. Would not pay retail for it.

 "Sweet little clock" 2010-01-28
By J. Marcy (Indiana)
I bought this clock because it was cheap, and the insta-set feature was intriguing. I plugged it in and it was instantly correct. I just had to slide the time zone switch over to my zone. Easy to use and the alarm is nice since I am usually ready to get up and no one else gets disturbed (it starts out pretty quiet and gets more annoying if you don't turn it off).

The only thing I have a problem with is it's WAY too bright. Those other reviews that say it was too dim must have had a bad clock because we can almost read by the light this thing puts out. The first night I was doing shadow puppets on the ceiling. Other than that I would recommend it.

 "Very disappointed" 2009-12-20
By Mark Alison (Boston MA)
The time is manually set at the factory and all you have to do is adjust for your time zone. When I did this, the clock was two minutes slow. No big deal I thought, tonight it will sync with the atomic clock like my two atomic watches always do. Next morning it was still two minutes slow. The following night I tested it by placing it in a window next to one of my atomic watches. In the morning it was still two minutes slow. The atomic watch grabbed the correct time as soon as it turned on to search at 12:00 A.M.

I returned the clock.

 "Not a fan" 2009-12-08
By L. P. Surprenant (Hudson, MA United States)
The light is actually blue - which is the color "experts" say NOT to use to fall asleep (texts, computers, etc). And it is bright enough to keep me awake. PLUS it is weird in how you change the settings. The hubby would rather use his cell phone alarm for those times needing changing than to bother changing it. Santa will be bringing a new clock.

"Works until just after the warranty expires" 2009-11-09
By R. Grimes (Sandy, Utah USA)
Not long after the warranty expired, the clock stopped keeping accurate time. I was able to set the time, per the instructions, but the time doesn't progress like it should. The hour and minute separator (the colon) blinks slower than once per second, and the minutes advance about one for every three minutes that my other clocks show.

This is basically pitiful performance. Most digital clocks that I've had keep on working forever - even if you have it 10 years or more. This one just doesn't cut it.

 "Under my daughter's cabinet" 2009-12-09
By Warehouse Willy (NY)
I had one of these Michael Graves CD-radios in my old home and my nostalgic daughter wanted to have one just like it . Amazon to the rescue . It was refurbished , even though the seller indicated it was NEW , however it works perfectly . The installation directions were less than adequet but with a little ingenuity , it got installed under my daughter's kitchen cabinet . At first I was going to give this 4~stars for sound quality but considering the price paid and all there was to it , I upped this to 5~stars . It's not like a $400 stereo . It's a $40 , well designed , compact , AM~FM radio , with a clock , and CD player that works . 5~STARS for the price .

 "Garbage" 2004-08-11
By K. Bohley
Bought this unit on clearance at Target. The radio reception was always poor. CDs played OK, but sound quality was low. After 8 months of use the system died while playing a CD. Now it cannot be turned on and the CD is stuck inside. Neither Target nor the manufacturer are willing to offer anything beyond the original 90 day warrantee. DON'T BUY IT!

We bought this kitchen clock radio because it was on clearance. We installed it in the kitchen and the radio worked fine and plays great. However, the CD player doesn't work. We put a CD in and when the tray slides inside, the CD actually gets stuck. The CD will play but when you eject the tray, the CD won't come out and gets stuck somewhere inside. We've ruined three CDs (more than the price of the radio) so far.

 "Great if on clearance" 2004-01-07
By Paul W. Sager (Saint Louis, Missouri)
I, too, bought this item for 75% off. With that in mind, I love this product. It was tough to install, but with patience, I got it installed. The design is sleek and works well in my kitchen which is quickly becoming a shrine to Michael Graves. There are a few things that I wish this would have:

The clock does not glow in the dark, so walking into a dark kitchen you will not know what time it is unless you turn on the light.

The stations on the radio do not come in as clearly as one would like, but that is typical with under the counter CD players

I wish it had an auxillary plug-in on it so that you can plug things into it and work with the timer to turn things automatically (my last under the unit did this).

Other than that, I do not suggest buying this product at full price.

"Great clock, so so CD and radio quality" 2005-11-09
By S. Marti (So Cal, USA)
My daughter falls asleep to a CD every night on a boombox, so when we decided she needed a clock in her room too, we replaced the boombox with this CD clock radio. The CD quality will suffice for a child, but for those adults who may want to turn up the volume every so often, you will probably be disappointed. I don't use the radio because we have really bad reception with mountains just south of us, but a digital tuner would have been nice. And what's with the built-in subwoofer? Amazon shows this as a feature but I have yet to find anything in my manual about it. Maybe I'm blind...but I'm not deaf...it certainly does NOT have the sound of a subwoofer. I would like to see a dual alarm LED with excellent CD sound, digital tuner, nap feature and nature sounds.

it's bulkier than i thought it would be. But i like the white personally. As a clock, it works excellently, however, not so good as a CDplayer/radio. A slight shake can pause the music for 2 seconds easily and i dont know if its because i live in a dorm or because it doesnt catch FM signals really well, i can never listen to good quality of music on radio.

one more thing, it took me a while to figure all the functions.

"Way too much $ for what it is" 2009-11-04
By Carol Lee (Ohio)
I wish I could have shopped for this kind of item in person so you could see how big, how bright, generally how it works.

The light itself doesn't wake you. The beeping alarm (or radio) wakes you. In no way should this product be advertised as "an exciting new way to start the day." The total effect of this item is when you wake up to your alarm, there's a low watt bedside light on in your dark room. That's it. Ok, so you didn't sense the light come on because it was gradual... but the end result is not impressive. Even at the peak of the "sunrise," it doesn't light up the room or make you believe you're waking up to light.

Doesn't seem like the technology in this product is complex enough to warrant the price. I bought a timer for my bedside lamp for $5.99 at my local hardware and will see how it compares.

On the plus side, shipping was speedy and it arrived ahead of schedule. I bought it through amazon.com so I could possibly read reviews and have some confidence about ease of return. Amazon's list price, new, was $77 compared to the Soleil website's listing of $165, which is a laughable price point for what this is.

 "Not Alarming Enough" 2009-11-02
By Spudman (Pasadena, MD United States)
It's been with us for about a week, bought locally by Mrs. Spudman. After reading the other Amazon comments, I advised her not to open the package, but to return it to CVS. Being the hard-headed woman glorified in song by Cat Stevens, she opted to keep the clock and decide for herself if it was indeed superloud. It's not.

The alarm clock is inexpensive and looks it. The numbers are hard to see from more than a couple feet away and the touted superloud alarm is anything but. Our kitchen timer is louder as are most of the alarm clocks we've ever had.

She finally cried uncle and packed up this unsatisfactory electrical appliance for a return.

On a positive note, the clock did keep accurate time and did sound out on the designated time while it was with us. For a spare alarm or a guest bedroom this item is acceptable. Because of its compact size, the Equity would also be a good alarm to take on vacation.

 "Worthless" 2009-10-21
By Brandi M. Nance (NC)
My previous alarm clock died in August of this year, and I bought this one after perusing the choices at a local store.

The vaunted "super loud" alarm is less than half the volume of my old clock, even when set to the higher volume. I have a sleep disorder and use a CPAP; this thing is easily ignored. I put it across the room because I have a habit of smacking the clock and rolling over, but it's not loud enough to force me out of bed. If you're the type to pull a pillow over your head, you won't need a snooze button. You may, however, need a second clock to actually wake you up.

This week (October), the alarm has stopped working entirely, with no warning. I discovered this by oversleeping for six hours because the thing didn't go off, causing me to miss two classes. That's less than two months of routine use.

In short, don't bother with this clock.

"Due to button design, radio only lasts 2-3 years" 2009-11-22
By jellyroll (United States)
This is a great little radio. I love the preset stations and auto-off timer. Battery life is decent if you only use the radio- I virtually stopped playing CDs because CDs drain the battery much faster.

The big problem is the buttons are not well designed. After a couple of years the plastic sheet that covers the buttons eventually gets brittle and cracks. The button then seem to lose their water-resistant quality and even though I rarely get mine wet, they just stop working. Right now, my batteries are fully charged, but I cannot turn on the radio or even change the time. For the price, I would expect this radio to last more than 2-3 years, but I'll probably purchase a 3rd one anyway because otherwise I like it.

This little AM and FM shower radio with CD player is great. It is well worth the price, having both the sound and the quality of all Sony products. I don't use it in the shower, though, since I have a cheap little shower radio that works just fine.

I needed a portable CD player to use in Children's Bible classes and I didn't want to haul around a big boom box. Also, I have used it to accompany myself in musical performances. It works great for small classes and rooms.

I bought a cheap adapter so I wouldn't have to use so many batteries. I'm very happy with both products.

 "The On-The-Go Tivoli!!!" 2010-01-15
By Brendan P. Clark (Everett, WA, USA)
The songbook is my fourth Tivoli radio. I already own the Model One, Two, and Satellite. They all have great sound and unique features. However, none of them are mobile and I wanted a radio to use while traveling, boating, and camping. The Songbook was the perfect solution; I could still get the great Tivoli sound anywhere I wanted to go. After using the radio for about a month, here are some likes and dislikes:

Likes:

- Great sound quality. Like any Tivoli, for such a small radio, it puts out a great sound. It fills the bedroom, kitchen, office, or garage very well.

- Build quality. The rubberized coating has a good feel when you grab it. It also is weather resistant so you can use it outside. The radio is heavy duty for its size and feels like it could take a fall and keep playing.

- Battery efficiency and charging capabilities. Not only do batteries last a long time, the radio recharges them as well. I bought a set of Sanyo Eneloop batteries (absolutely worth the money) specifically for the Songbook. They last about 15 hours on a single charge. I use my radio about an hour a day and charge it every two weeks. And, when the batteries do get drained, the built in charger refreshes them in about 5 hours.

- Digital tuning. The digital tuner really breaks the Tivoli mold by straying away from the analog dial tuner. The digital tuner is just as good, if not better, than the analog version. Once a frequency is set, you can move the antenna for the best reception. I have found this radio pulls more stations than my other Models using the external antennas.

- AM/FM presets. I like being able to switch between a couple stations with just the push of a button. It makes tuning quick and easy.

- Keyhole hanger. Being such a simple feature, the keyhole serves a great purpose. By being able to hang the radio on the wall, it gets it up and out of the way. It also makes using the controls easier since it is stationary and stable when hung.

Dislikes:

- Lack of carrying handle. For a portable radio, it would have been nice to have a built in carrying handle. This is solved if you use the Tivoli Songbook Carry Bag; however, it's an additional $30.

Overall, this is a really good, portable radio. I tend to use it more than my Two and Satellite because I can take it room to room. I've also used it as a speaker for my laptop and it works great for that. The Songbook is all that I expected out of a Tivoli product. It's not a radio that has earthmoving bass, but it is a perfect companion for good quality, clean sound. Listening to all kinds of music and talk radio, I am always pleased with the sounds the Songbook broadcasts.

"Good Radio/Needs Real World Fixes" 2009-12-22
By Charles J. Turner (Sedley, Virginia)
Yes, it is a good radio compared to others I have had in the woods over the past 30 years. Digital tuner is convenient but reception is just average. Function is good of buttons etc. Sound is pretty darn good for such a compact radio. Better than most, though a treble bass control would also be an improvement. Radio will fall over easy and it also needs a little handle. They could have made a handle that acted as a lean back or base stabilizer. Charging function is good and battery staying power will last me a three day trip in the woods. I have had the radio three years and now am having problems with it. Sometimes it will post a "E" on the screen and it takes a whack to make it play. Also sometimes now the charger will not begin to charge at first and again it takes a whack. So most likely it does not have long to live. I'll most likely get made at it one night when it finally goes and leaves me without tunes and shoot it. It is an expensive radio and not worth $200, $100 yes if you can get three years out of it or more. I would buy another one for $100.
